Dear All:
I have mother's permission to post.
One the mothers I have been working with reported that when she was travelling home from LAX,
she requested that my milk not go through the x-rays. She was told that was not possible due to
security regulations but exceptions could be made for "medical reasons." She explained that her
baby does not take formula and that the breast milk was medically necessary. (He's been a very
slow gainer and had difficulty with formula when she had not been able to pump enough). They
then took the breast milk through the metal detector but it supposedly did not pass the security
test. She was asked if she any medications and she explained that she takes herbs for my low milk
supply. She was not allowed to take her breast milk on the plane. She asked if they wanted her to
"show them how it is done" and pump right there for them. She then had to undergo a body
check and her bags were searched, even though they had passed through the x-ray. They then
wanted another full-body search. At this point, she lost it, asked them what do they want from
her since she had done everything they asked, grabbed her baby and started to feed her baby in
the airport. At that point, she was given the milk and told they could go.
A family member wrote to the state senator where she is from, but she wants to know what other
measures she should take. She felt totally humiliated by the experience.
Best, Susan Burger
PS. My computer is undergoing repairs tonight & I won't be able to respond for a few days.
