I reside in Kane County, Illinois.  Here a special advocate (known as a
guardian ad litum) is appointed for minor children in divorce cases to
look out for their best interests.  That person advises the judge in the
case on what is best for the child.  This mother should investigate
whether there is such a system in place in the jurisdiction where the
case has been filed. My husband has been appointed in several cases, but
this has never been the question.
