The trick is to reduce exposure to bovine proteins, rather than give up
breastfeeding! IME, if the mom was diligent about eliminating bovine in
her own diet and continued to offer the breast very often to comfort the
baby (these babies often want to suck a lot for comfort, which is what I
think stimulates something of an oversupply - ie oversupply is another
symptom, not a cause) then after 14 - 20 days the baby miraculously becomes
calm and almost a different baby.

I just had to write in, we saw this exact scenario yesterday at our LLL
meeting. Mom had been to a meeting about two weeks earlier, distraught about why
her baby would pull off the breast screaming, was always fidgety and
unhappy. Pedi told her she just had a "fussy baby" as did family and friends. After
watching this happen over and over at the meeting, we discussed a trial of
complete dairy elimination for two weeks. She had already tried eliminating
cow's milk and cheeses but this time read labels for anything in breads or
cookies or cereals. She said it took about a week or so to see any change, then by
2-3 weeks, she felt like she literally had a "different baby" as Pamela
mentioned. The baby sat happily, and with calm alertness on mom's lap all during
a long meeting yesterday. It was quite amazing and wonderful and mom was
thrilled to come and share her story. The saddest part was how long she and the
baby suffered while everyone blamed the baby for being "fussy."
