Dear Diane,
I relatively often see mothers who use these shields (they are sold in
hospitals by nurses - when mothers have "flat","small"nipples (often perfect
nipples to me), nobody know how to help with latch etc.). This company is
quite aggressive here.
Nearly all these moms use it with "wings" pointing to the baby's nose and
chin. They say another way (wings to cheeks) is incomfortable for them,
because the shield easily slips away from the nipple during latch-on, they
unable to form a nice breast "sandwich", because they need to hold these
wings, or the baby nipple-feeds ( I understand their reasons better after
reading your letter).
May babies feel this edge by their sensitive lip mucosa and tongue, so they
slip to the nipple part ?

Sincerely yours,
Victoria Nesterova,
bf supporter, Kiev, Ukraine

Subject: butterfly-shaped nipple shield?

The Avent "nipple-protectors" (www.avent.com) are an interesting shape. I
can see them working fine if the baby nipple-sucks. I can't see a
wide-mouthed baby being happy with them. Surely his lower lip, at least,
would extend over the edge! If that actually *works,* it could be even
better than what we're accustomed to, but I just can't see it working. Does
anyone have any experience with them?
