Heather W Neil comments that crying for hours cannot be good for babies,
referring to sick, hospitalized children, and I couldn't agree more. As one
who works on a maternity unit where the sound of babies crying seems not to
affect a good deal of the staff, I submit that allowing babies to cry for
prolonged periods dehumanizes those who work there as well.

What does it say about us, that we can go on about our work without
immediately responding to the intense distress of another human being, and
one who has no other recourse but to wail, since they can't reach a call
bell nor phone the hotline to the scandal sheets?

I am proud to report that my reaction to crying babies has gotten stronger
and stronger the longer I work there, but I think my own cortisol levels are
approaching dangerous levels at times.
