Yesterday, I had a mother of two boys (7y/o and 2y/o) who breastfed (6wks
and 3wks respectively. She is breastfeeding her new baby girl. She told me
that both the boys had red, raw bottoms, that she tried "$300 worth of butt
creams", none of which helped. She tried changing her diet. Asked what
that meant, she replied she quit milk products and other things.... When
she went 'cold-turkey' to a formula (cow's milk based with iron) the
excoriation began to heal up immediately....with both of the boys. He
pediatrician told her these kids were 'allergic' to her milk. (AHHH!!) I
asked her further about her diet, there were no heavy uses of citrus or
tomatoes (acidic foods). I told her that this puzzled me, that I knew that
babies were not allergic to their mother's milk, but that something clearly
was a problem. I am at the end of my thoughts....anyone else have any
ideas?? I told her I'd ask the group and call her if anyone had any great
ideas. She really likes the breastfeeding, but doesn't like that excoriated
buttocks (no kidding) Anyone have ideas??
Thanks ahead of time, you guys are an incredible resource. Betsy
