Lisa,

I would agree with Catherine. Perhaps this weight gain is barely adequate for this baby. If the baby does not appear content and the mum has a history of a previous poor supply, there are probably warning bells here. I have been in the position several times where I have had to be the "baddie" and tell a mother that her breastfeeding is not going as well as she would like. I always hate doing this and it always causes upset but the truth is important. Once the truth is acknowledged it is much easier to work towards a solution.

It is heartbreaking for women who do everything "right" and their bodies let them down for whatever reason. The same goes for childbirth. I am always heartbroken too when a highly motivated woman encounters problems. It is just not fair!

Keeping in mind that the milk supply she has now is probably what it is going to be from here on in, I would be working quickly to build her supply up. What about domperidone?

It would be interesting to know the background to her low supply last time too.

Good luck
