Those experiments were done by Harry Harlow, with a wire frame "mother"
with a nipple, and a cloth "mother" with no milk supply. The infant
monkeys went to the wire frame for milk, but hung onto the cloth mother
the rest of the time. Harlow wanted to study the importance of touch in
infancy in primates...he concluded it was supremely important.
