It is standard practice in all our nurseries to tightly wrap baby, pinning
both arms down like baby was in a strait jacket, and placing baby at a 45
degree angle toward baby's right side. A rolled blanket is used as a
bolster behind baby's back and another blanket tucked tightly on both sides
of the crib mattress. Baby is effectively immobilized and can't possibly
give early feeding cues. In the Level III NICU, they do put babies on their
stomachs on occasion, usually within a little nest so baby's knees are
tucked up & under. That gives baby more tummy expansion room for breathing.
The RNs say it's okay because they are always watching baby.
It concerns me that we practice one thing, (tummy sleeping & rigidly
scheduled feeds) then instruct the parents to NEVER do that when they take
baby home.
