Noami asks which mothering article mentions Prolacta and Human Milk Banks:
Fresh off the press! Nov/Dec 2005, page 33. "making money off mother's
milk" by Candace Walsh.
The study is by Richard J Schanler. States "In a four year-243 preemie
study, neonatologist Richard J Schanler found that infants fed pasteurized donor
breastmilk thrived no more and no less than those on formula". The article
then immediately says. "The precious ingredients of unpasteurized breastmilk
that fend off infection were no longer present after pasteurization." Now
was this last sentence supposition on the authors part or fact from the
research.
I have personally emailed the author at Mothering requesting both the
original research by Schanler she is referring to, and also the article/research
she used to state pasteurization destroys antibodies.
For what it's worth, a quick google search found Dr. Schanler to be a well
published supporter of breastfeeding and lecturer with Dr Ruth Lawrence and
others.
