Hello everyone,
I am wondering if anyone can offer any help or suggestions here.
I just saw a baby 9 weeks old, 3.700 at birth, now weighing 5.852.
Fat adorable baby.
She has begun pulling and crying at breast. The first month, things were
fine with the breastfeeding. Slowly she began to take a long time to settle
after the feeds, then began throwing up afterwards. Went to Gastro and now
on Maalox which stopped the spitting up.
Now the baby will only eat in her sleep.
I saw her suck for about 2 minutes with a terribly panicked look on her
face, the minute there was a letdown, off and screamed hysterically. She
had transferred only 10 cc.
Typical overactive MER and probably oversupply, although at this point
supply is dwindling.
Mom is pumping to guard supply.
Baby will suck on breast after mom pumps everything out. Baby will suck a
bottle until the first drop comes out and then begin a hyper gagging motion.
On plain finger, baby does not gag, even when inserted to soft palate. I
tried then to insert a FF tube, and minute liquid came, baby gagged. This
mother is up in arms, because yesterday she did not sleep at all, and
therefore did not nurse at all. She is only not dehydrated because of what
the mom manages to feed her in her sleep. It is extremely hot here.
Previous child was also miserable and was diagnosed with reflux, but she
said this is even worse.
At about 6 weeks, the baby had one bottle of milk formula and broke out with
a severe rash and was hospitalized. This WAS NOT the first milk formula
bottle she had had. But since then, no formula, and mother said she refuses
to take a bottle anyway. I had suggested trying a super soft nipple
(B-Free) (I was concerned with dehydration) and mother said today that she
plays with it, sucks a little, and then screams when pumped milk actually
comes out.
We are trying to get an appointment with a BF friendly Pediatric Gastro, but
first appointment is only on Aug. 28th.
Mom has 3 other kids under the age of 5.
I will appreciate any suggestions I can get, as I am worried.
Thanks in Advance,
Jessica Billowitz, IBCLC
