Greetings,
As an IBCLC the issue for some hospitals in certain parts of the country
is that IBCLC's have no type of state licensure. In Washington State it
would cost at least $450 a year (Thats what Speach Pathologists now
pay). Mary Solberg in Olympia had done some preliminary investigations
on this - but we tabled it because we thought many IBCLC's would not
be willing to pay $450 a year.
The other issue I have is how many IBCLC's actually belong to their
professional organization ILCA - there is a committee presently working
on the feasibility of a US Affiliate that would take on directly the
issues that face many IBCLC's in the US -BUT how many of you would join
- how much would you pay? Many National organizations in the US that
lobby on a National level have yearly dues of $300 and upwards - Even if
the US Affilliate had national dues of $50-100 + ILCA dues would you join?
IF you want to have the IBCLC as the entry level requirement without the
RN - it is so important that you join your professional organization ILCA -
(BTW- did you know that most IBCLC's that do not have their RN have a
higher level of education)
Best Regards
Karen Querna RN, BSN, IBCLC
