A cut or wound would not heal if it is not well cleaned.
First of all i will suggest to keep the nipples clean in order to remove
contaminations that could cause infection. Running water and mild soap
once a day, followed by normal saline after each breastfeedings (for
sterile normal saline 8 tsp of salt in 1 gallon of boiled water) or if
mom is out and about she can use plain water.
I would also suggest to use Mupirocin, a topical antibiotic, and if the
nipples do not heal soon (after a proper latch) I would suggest the
mother would be treated with systemic antibiotics...stat!
Ciao,
Rosellina
