Sometimes I try to pull "other-mammal" knowledge from people. But when I
ask what a farmer could do to get more milk from a cow, the answer is often
a blank look followed by "Give it more water?" I'm amazed that the notion
of more frequent milking just doesn't occur to people."
Remembering that Peter Hartmann's initial interest and research followed his
work with animals, thought you might get a smile out of this news story I
heard snippets from yesterday.. 'rehashed' for summer national radio (easy
listening stuff).
the Norwegian government is to introduce a law to insist that cows are given
special mattresses (that have been around for a few years)... interviewee
talked about improved quality and quantity, and fewer injuries .... in an
advertisement I found for the mattesss, it said :
>>
Dairy cows show an increased milk production when they feel good, rest and
lay down. Therefore special mattresses have been developed for dairy cows.
Next to a higher milk production this results in less injuries, improved
health condition (less mastitis) and better hygiene. The mattress is build
up out of an inner part for the softness and an outer protection membrane.
