I feel for this mom. The only case I had that was similar was a baby who
refused to nurse while awake but would nurse at night, while asleep.
However, he did take a bottle during the day. I had this couplet in the
hospital and saw the little guy breastfeed beautifully the first and second
day. The trouble started on day of d/c when he was circumcised. He refused
to nurse from that point on. They thought it was temporary and they were
sent home just hours after the circ, as are many baby boys who are circ'ed
just before d/c. I followed up with this mom, who tried everything and was
very patient. She carried him in a sling, did sts. He was 5-6 months old
before she could get him to nurse directly while he was awake. This guy was
just a very sensitive little boy! The thing that comes to my mind about the
5 month old who won't feed at all except when asleep is autism or something
along those lines. If he was having feeding problems, seems like they'd be
happening while he was asleep, too. I wonder if there are any other
aversive behaviors? Does he make eye contact, react to different kinds of
fabrics? My sister works in a preschool and she and her co-teachers are
disturbed at the amount of autism they are seeing. She says they can spot
the kids who aren't yet diagnosed, though of course they don't say anything
unless there's a real problem, in which case they suggest having the child
evaluated. Repetitive behaviors would be another symptom. I'm not sure if
that would show up in a child this young. Another sign, how does the baby
respond to sts and snuggling? I'm no authority, for sure, but I do vividly
remember the ILCA session in Boca where touch aversion and its impact on
feeding were discussed. This baby reminds me of some of those traits, a
baby who refuses to feed, which is a social activity, while awake. That is
a red flag in my book! I agree with Cathy, he should be seen by a
specialist or team who specializes in feeding/behavior abnormalities.
