Along with Laurie's post on dairy allergies, I was thinking of celiac
disease. There is a good web site for this disease but I don't know what
it is. There are also many web sites for food allergies. Celiac is
problems digesting gluten (the thing that makes wheat rise). If mom
wants to dry no dairy, that means no milk, yogurt, ice cream, etc. She
needs to look on package labels for casein and whey. They are hidden in
many many processed foods -- bread, soups, candy, cookies, crackers,
some lunch meats or hot dogs, margarines, frozen dinners. Parve means
dairy free, some kosher is also. Grocery stores often have sections with
health foods and soy milks/ice creams. Also lots of bakeries and stuff
on the web now. Soy cheese has casein in it so she needs to avoid that.
It only took me 2 days off dairy to have my son stop spitting up, and I
have read that the elimination process may only take 3 days. The special
formulas are either made from soy or dairy. I personally feel that the
"hypoallergic" ones that are made out of dairy are still dairy and
likely to cause trouble if the baby is allergic to dairy. They are
supposed to be so processed that the cow protein is easier to diget.
Many moms feel horrible about giving up all this stuff. It is hard at
first, but I have lived dairy, wheat and egg free for 15 years now! I
have one daughter who doesn't tolerate dairy much, one who doesn't
tolerate dairy or any gluten, and my son who is the most allergic of all
and who all he has to do is eat dairy or wheat during pollen season and
bam! he has an ear infection.
