Becky,
I don't know the law in South Dakota, but, in at least Florida and
Kentucky a person can be excused from Jury Duty if they are the sole
caregiver of a minor under school age. All I had to do was return my
jury duty card and either check that box off or write that in for my
reason for postponing Jury Duty.
