This week I have had the pleasure of working with several mothers whose babies
were small or extremely small at birth. By small I mean 1700 g or under,
v.small is well under 1000 g. All started expressing immediately; the older
babies have not had anything but their own mother's milk since about day 2 -
one had gotten 11 ml, or less than one tablespoon, of banked milk before mother
had enough.
The two larger babies have not gotten fortifier added to their mothers' milk.
They get multivitamins and iron and folate according to protocols in place for
our hospital, but nothing else. Their growth and development has been right on
target so that at term, they are normal term size. Don't know whether this is
typical here, but it tickles me no end.
