"I've been learning from her, and I've observed her using her methods of
actually AGREEING and coming CLOSER to those who say things that are
negative about "baby friendly" or breastfeeding."
I can say that I have learned just as much about being a health educator
from my husband the business mogel, as I have from yearly childbirth and
lactation trainings and conferenes.
The one tool he gave me a while back was the book:
_Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In_ by Roger Fisher
et al.
The principles apply to all aspects of adult ( and some child)behavior, and
can be applied to health education, business or even personal relationships.
The tools can be used to the advantage of the authority figure ( doctor,
educator...) or for the benefit of the patient with regard to bettering the
health behavior. Here is an example( with rubuttal comments) from Medical
Economics - Obstetrics-Gynecology - October 2000, p. 80. of use for an
authority figure:
