Just a little story about Miami and the night Katrina hit....Well they
didn't implement a hurricane plan, but Renee B., the LC and I got sucked into
staying until 11pm when "someone" would come in to replace us....RIGHT! (Didn't
happen)
So as the winds howled and rain blew in from places no one saw...Renee
mopped and I was charge. As I made rounds to check on my patients, I went into
one room of a patient who was totally in the dark. I told her that I would
leave the hall door open so the light would shine in somewhat and leave the
bathroom door ajar as another barrier. She was happily in bed with her little boy
nursing away. I had to stop and admire the image....I told her that it
seemed like the best place to be on a night like "tonight" and she agreed. She
said he would suck, drop off and root back on and he seemed to be quite happy,
so she was happy. By the way he was her 4th child and she had never quite
gotten it down as well as she was doing that night. I also reminded her to
treasure the moment and remind him of the night he was truly the "only child".
That moment in time helped make all the mopping and whining by the ones who
said they had no TV, lights were flickering off and on, AC wasn't working
worth the stay. I don't know how many times I said to the whineys..." I know , I
hate when that happens too, but we ARE having a HURRICANE."
Well Renee and I got to leave at 1 AM and thanks to her big SUV and luck we
made it home.
No electricity, no cable, but we were happy to see we had no flooding, I had
a house, she had hers (especially after we saw my neighbor's house had a big
tree on it and all the electric lines dangling all over). So yesterday we
got water and hot water in a dishpan can be very orgasmic and today we got
cable (so the old boy is happy) and my two daughters with new babies are happy
they didn't have to worry about formula...Now we pray for Louisana.
They will be having THE HURRICANE.
Tidying up in South Miami,
Leanne Jewell RNC, IBCLC, LCCE, FACCE
