I tell moms exactly what LLLI tells moms, skip the baby cereal (which is
pretty low nutritionally) and start baby on a bit of mashed ripe banana,
cooked and mashed sweet potato or yam, or mashed avocado. Next food is
mashed, or scraped meat or other proteins for the iron content. For more
information, look in THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING.

Why give a food that is inferior nutritionally to such a small baby (meaning
the baby cereal)? Human milk is the perfect food so continue with real foods
like a mashed banana and skip the boxed stuff.

Baby cereal has such low nutritional value. It is not necessary for a baby
to eat this stuff. If mom is convinced baby needs it, mix it with water if
she doesn't want to hand express or pump some of her milk out. The idea that
you "must" have breast milk or formula to mix cereal with seems to be
another push by the formula companies to find a use for their products with
breastfeeding moms.
