Dear Friends:
I have heard that in the US, a huge majority of those with the
IBLCE-credential are medically trained. Lots of nurses, for one thing. Is that true?
What about the rest of the world?***
When I took the exam in 1992, my co-pioneer-examinees were 8 LLL leaders and 3 contact persons of the other Dutch breastfeeding support organisation (I was/am a LLLleader with a background in teaching). Nowadays students are mainly nurses, midwifes etc and an occacional lay breastfeeding counselor and occacionally professionals from other disciplins. Belgian examinees are primairily midwifes with an occasional other professional (biology, nurse-specialist, physician). Both Dutch and Belgian LLL leaders and other lay bf counselors with no background in nursing, midwifery or medical education are having a very hard time counting experience hours and formal training hours in pshychology, anatomy, research, etc, and feel discouraged to consider applying as exam candidate. I find this a sad evolution. Much potential is waisted this way.

Warmly,
Gonneke,
Dutch IBCLC, lactation educator, living in Germany, teaching in Belgium
