Why would you want to fortify mother's own milk for an ill term
baby?????

We sometimes need to fortify for extra protein and calories if the baby
is fluid restricted or is slowly weaning off TPN. Other reasons may be
for post-surgery babies who are not able to tolerate enough volume for
various reasons. We use high calorie formulas when mother's milk is not
available, but I certainly don't want to use that if I have breastmilk
available. Soooo...I want to find the best thing to add to breastmilk
so that we can use it! Otherwise, we many times cannot meet the baby's
nutritional needs with what little we have to work with. Of course, if
the mother has a really good supply, I will have her separate hindmilk
so that we can get "pure" high calorie breast milk. I just wondered
what else was happening in feeding this kind of infant.
