Many of the procedures can be done while the baby is in the room with their
mothers. I am seeing over the years more and more excuses to separate the
babies from their mothers in the first hours and I am not convinced of any bad
out comes if they were to be delayed.
One example is the poor mother who has a cesarean birth. Back 20 years ago
when I worked L&D in a large hospital, the babies stayed in the operating
room being held by their father (or SO) while the mother's surgery was
completed. Than the 3 of them would go to the recovery room together to bond and
breastfeed. We would wait up to 2 hours before doing the baby care.
Now all babies are assumed sick until proven healthy! I would like to see
the evidence that is pushing these procedures in the first hour after birth
and why they cannot be delayed another hour or more.
Can anyone out there help me find a reference? I was told that once the
baby was dry, they were no longer a risk to the health care person and therefore
do not have to keep wearing gloves to care for them.
More and more places are delaying the initial bath up to 24 hours or more.
