>Does Increased Duration of Exclusive Breastfeeding Protect Against
>Helicobacter pylori Infection? The Newcastle Thousand Families Cohort Study
>at Age 49-51 Years.

I was thrilled to see this! This wonderful long-term cohort study
comes from my doorstep, practically, in Newcastle upon Tyne in the
North East of England. This study is known colloquially as 'the Red
Dot Babies study' because all the babies enrolled in it in the 1940s
got a big red sticker on their notes, to alert healthcare providers!
The medical school here has always been good at publicising the study
and its outcomes, and they occasionally have parties where the Red
Dot Babies get together so they can get a 'thank you' from the
researchers.

The population of this part of the UK is fairly static compared to
other parts of the country, so the 'babies' have been trackable for
longer than they would be in, say, London.

At the time these babies were born, there was still enough exclusive
and long term (ie beyond the first few weeks) breastfeeding here to
make it possible to compare outcomes with babies who did not
breastfeed.

If they'd started the study even 10 years later, I wonder if they
would have missed the opportunity.

There is a similar on-going cohort study in Newcastle, called the
Millenium Baby Study, of 1000 babies born in 2000, which will give
great data to compare with the Red Dots.
