Hi, Nicki and All: In re: to the question of getting nursing babies to
their hospitalized mothers. We allow nursing babies in for feeds/visits to
their mothers if: 1. mom is in a private room. 2. a responsible adult to
bring baby and stay with mom/baby the whole visit. Mom is not expected to
be able to care for baby and the nursing staff is not responsible for baby
care. 3. Mom is medically stable and physically up to a visit.
You may want to suggest that the hospital's infection control nurse be
involved in the decision-making. And it always helps to have a written
policy to cover this situation.
I have asked that Lactation Services be notified whenever a nursing mom or
baby is admitted to another unit for care. Even if mom has no concerns, I
like to visit to introduce (or re-introduce if she delivered with us)
myself and leave my card. The nurses really appreciate it and it gives me
an opportunity to do some staff education. I'm planning on offering some
lunch-time inservices to the house staff in the future - when I have a few
free moments to put something together!
Good Luck!
