The dose of folic acid is recommended to be 4 milligrams (not micrograms)in
a woman who has a history of having a child with a neuro tube defect, or in
a woman whose family on either side has a history of neural tube defects, or
otherwise at risk of NTD ie: on certain antiepileptic drugs or other drugs
known to cause NTD.
The minimum recommendation for all women of childbearing age is 400
micrograms (not milligrams) daily,
The minimum dose for pregnant women is 1 milligram daily
This is covered in several of general medical textbooks, and drug refs
including Lacy, C. F., Armstrong, L. L., Goldman, M. P., & Lance, L. L.
(2005). Lexi-drugs for pocket pc.
I hope that helps to clear up the confusion.
