<<< The latest "wrinkle" in
my neck of the woods is "threatening" moms that if the baby doesn't
breastfeed in x period of time they will have to give formula to prevent
the blood
sugar from going down. >>>
<<< Why is formula the answer? Why ignore that every mother has colostrum
in
her breasts at delivery? Even moms that can't make a full supply of mature
milk will have colostrum. Drops of colostrum will bring a baby's blood
sugar
up and keep it up longer than any formula; this is evidence based knowledge.
There are many studies showing that supplementing in the hospital
reduces breastfeeding duration and exclusivity. >>>>
The reason formula is the answer is because moms are told they do not have
enough *breastmilk* for the baby, "your milk isn't in yet". "Nothing is coming
out", baby is either nursing "too much" then have to supplement for the
hungry baby or big baby or won't latch so supplement with formula because back to
the "no milk yet". Colostrum it seems is never even in the picture at all
about how great it is and the importance of it and how it is SUPPOSED to be
small amounts. Ugh!!
I did a hospital visit for a mom with baby, bili of 15 and baby under lights
and supp with formula because not enough milk. They had her pump---one
breast at a time for 5 minutes?!?!?!
Nurse brought about *12* water bottles so she could put the pumped milk
in!! It totally set this mom up to think "I should be having this much milk" and
of course she doesn't have enough and why she needs to supplement. I then
went and asked to use the copier at the nurses station to copy info on jaudice
and left a copy for them.
Just a few weeks back heard a speaker talk on jaundice that was held at the
hospital and nurses were there and 1 dr. One of things that was mentioned
several times by nurses was liability. For example if they don't do the newborn
exam immediately after the baby is born instead of letting mom hold the baby
and nurse first.
