In all the stories about Karo I never saw what I have come to understand the
principle reason why babies were recommended to have Karo....
We all know that breastfed babies are seldom if ever constipated.....and
often formula fed babies are....Karo syrup was used to minimize constipation.
When I breastfed my first daughter 35 years ago and we hit the infamous no poops
for a few days...my mother and aunt were all into give some dark Karo syrup
in warm water in a bottle...Even though I was breastfeeding and had no
support other than my aunt...I tried it. I know the kid was not fond of it...and
eventually she pooped in spite of the Karo. As I got more experience and more
children and found LLL I discovered normal breastfeeding behavior and all the
others had those oozing breastfeeding stools which my one daughter now refers
to as "drooling stools" from Dr. Sears' book I believe she says they are
associated with drooling and teething. Now we just experiment with which diapers
absorb the best.
And the baby book story from me is my husband's...He is youngest. His
sister is now 66 and her baby book was nicely filled out...when sister no. 2
showed up in middle of war my MIL filled in neatly just below the other entries,
since paper was scarce. My husband born after the war in 1946 was
entered...name, date, time and weight...that was it. As each one of my children has had
a child I give them their baby books with some photos. The girls are doing
pretty good at keeping up. We will see as time and other things come along.
Glad to be home in Miami.
Miss the cool air of California but not those BIG hills.
