Melinda asks:
<<Does JCAHO look at lactation services at all?>>
No, not officially. It is not in their guidelines, nor in the issues that
concern them r/t OB. You may get an individual assessor that will ask
questions about breastfeeding/lactation, IBCLCs, breastfeeding outcomes, etc, but
basically they don't dictate how many staff or what kind of staff the hospital
has. JCAHO is interested in outcomes. If you can demonstrate that you have
had X number of breastfeeding babies readmitted to the hospital that went
home that were not breastfeeding effectively which is directly related to a lack
of experienced, knowledgeable, breastfeeding support and services, you might
get someplace because kernicterus/jaundice/hyperbilirubinemia is one of
their sentinel events, and is the only place in all their literature in which
lactation consultants are mentioned.
