This is in regards to the offer of ethics in accepting "items" from
reps...we are currently under siege from Nestle's Good Start to get into our
hospital, the reps got on to the unit and have been bugging the chief of Neonatology
and our unit manager; she is now hiding from him and has had Security have
him go thru this unbelievable check in. I smiled when he began his hype and
handouts of pens and candy. I just said "No, thanks, I buy my own." I thought
he would drop dead and my coworkers including 3 other LCs and our manager
were like what is going on here. My one buddy LC knew ....I have boycotted
Nestle's for 25 years. I explained the concept of Nestle's global policy...they
said, "Yeah, we remember you made a stink when we were selling Nestle's candy
for the Employee Activities Committee."
We now I have a few getting with the idea of how this company abuses its
riches to the underdeveloped countries of the world. So tonite as I pack my
Hurricane Team bags (here we go again) and was wondering what book to take to
read when I am off duty I thought why not bring my book on Milk, Money and
Madness by Dia Michels. It might generate some more understanding that I might
not effect Nestle's global policy, but I might generate enough interest to
effect my small corner of the globe and have nurses talk enough to tweak the big
guy who makes decisions into to not considering Good Start and support
breastfeeding even more than he does.
I also can't tell you how empowered I felt turning down that candy and
pen...and even more so when the Ross guy showed up pedaling his stuff within an
hour. One coworker tried to make "nice" by saying "at least Ross and Mead
Johnson approach Breastfeeding as the best way and then they offer educational
days to nurses." I gently reminded them that really great lunch comes with a
very big commercial and you have to pay for it in more ways than one.
So if Dr.Gordan has any takers to his offer or joke, I think the commercial
will reveal itself.
It is so very important that we remember the old adage of there is no such
thing as a free lunch.
Perhaps we can make a resolution to ourselves to read the fine print, look
between the lines and realize that a small statement of "No thank you" will
afford you a sense of ethical behavior that will effect many others.
Got to get packing...
