Dear friends,
Me and Natalya Polizhak are puzzled for some time by different normal
weight gain requirements for babies in different editions of BAB.
In BAB 97 on page 118:
"Normal weight gain for a breastfed baby is 4 to 8 ounces (113 to 227 grams)
during the first 3 to 4 months, 3 to 5 ounces (85 to 142 grams) per week
from 4 to 6 months and 1 1/2 to 3 ounces (42 to 85 grams) per week from 6 to
12 months (Cohen 1995; Dewey 1992a)"
On the kellymom.com there is a table with weight gain for babies (based on
BAB 2003)
http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/growth/weight-gain-metric.html
"0-4 months 170 grams per week †
4-6 months 113-142 grams per week
6-12 months ‡ 57-113 grams per week
† It is acceptable for some babies to gain 4-5 ounces (113-142 grams) per
week.
‡ The average breastfed baby doubles birth weight in 5-6 months. By one
year, the typical breastfed baby will weigh about 2 1/2 times birth weight.
By two years, differences in weight gain and growth between breastfed and
formula-fed babies are no longer evident.

Revised ed. Schaumburg, Illinois: La Leche League International, 2003, p.
148-149."
My question is:
why does the numbers for weight gain were raised for older babies? Those 85
g per week requirements were so comforting for moms of active, rolling and
crawling 5-month old breastfed babies :).
Sincerely yours,
