We have all encountered parents who are desperate for some undisturbed
sleep. (I am now having chilling flashbacks to the infancy of my
youngest. Not pretty.) I think it is helpful to offer parents a quick
rundown of infant physiology and the properties of breastmilk: tiny
stomach capacity, incredibly accelerated growth rate, rapid gastric
emptying time, highly bioavailable food, all of which leads to...<drum
roll>...normal frequent feedings!
Dear Friends;
While teaching parents about infant physiology is a valid practice, it
does not meet the need of an exhausted parent. A tired person can not focus on
someone else's needs very well.
When the mother can sleep with the baby, the problem
disappears.......everybody sleeps. No more exhaustion. At least teach the mother to lie down to
breastfeed in a safe bedsharing environment so she can rest. Maternal and
parental exhaustion won't be such an issue if we teach the benefits of
bedsharing and the necessity for a safe bedsharing environment.
This is where the AAP SIDS Committee has done a terrible disservice to
mothers and babies.
