Corrine,
You raised an important point that warrants emergence from lurkdom.
IMHO, our focus as educators and health care providers, whether in a
professional or lay capacity, is to be *truthful* rather than "nice".
We have all encountered parents who are desperate for some undisturbed
sleep. (I am now having chilling flashbacks to the infancy of my
youngest. Not pretty.) I think it is helpful to offer parents a quick
rundown of infant physiology and the properties of breastmilk: tiny
stomach capacity, incredibly accelerated growth rate, rapid gastric
emptying time, highly bioavailable food, all of which leads to...<drum
roll>...normal frequent feedings! Ta-dah! Many, many times I have
seen the "light go on" when I discuss this with parents. It is easy to
present this information in an objective, non-emotional manner; it's
simply normal human physiology. The TRUTH is that feeding a bovine- or
plant-based substance to an infant every 4 hours, and parents getting
undisturbed sleep, is *abnormal* <TIC>.
