I am not aware of studies comparing different ointment combinations for
nipple trauma/infection/yeast overgrowth...we need some!
I do not know why Dr Newman decided to include the steroid in the
combination...but I am aware of the common combination of steroid and
antifungal. Fungal overgrowth often causes an eczematous reaction, and
eczematous lesions often harbor fungal overgrowth, is my understanding.
I use the combination nipple ointment a fair amount, and know that women who
had been using lanolin often describe the ointment as much more "soothing".
(BUT of course, fixing the latch is the most important/helpful!!!)
I would love to participate in doing a study comparing pure bactroban with
the combination ointment on chewed up nipples...
any takers??
