I hear what you're saying about having to pick up the pieces after one of
these "train wrecks."
My experience (I work in a hospital) has been that early postpartum mothers
often don't hear what we tell them (such as the mothers on percocet that
you mention. Mag sulfate is even worse :-)!) or only get about half of it
right.
Sometimes a mother will repeat what she *thinks* someone said or what she
thinks was meant. My response when a mother reports something that seems
off the wall is to say 'Oh, I wonder why she said that?' When I check with
the other person I usually find that the mother misunderstood some part of
the information.
As you noted, we only have these mothers for a very short time. Some
problems don't present right away or can be lost in other issues (such as a
baby who won't latch after a circumcision). Many mothers need ongoing help
which the hospital LC isn't able to provide. We do our best to get them
started and often recommend a follow up visit or refer to another HCP
(whether the mother follows through is out of our control). Thank goodness
these mothers do call you. Thank goodness you're there to help them after
they get home.
