"There has to be something else going on if
(full-term, healthy) baby quietly slips into
near-death, or dies, at breast. It's known to happen
during bottle-feeding also."
Phyllis Adamson observed
and this seems to be the KEY here- airway occlusion
while breastfeeding isn't killing these babies-
healthy babies will move their heads, squirm and cry
if their airway is blocked- they will NOT continue to
suck/swallow(aka breastfeed) if their airway is
blocked-- so I believe that the phrase "death while
breastfeeding" is extrememly inflammatory and
innacurate
basic latch/skintoskin teaching would prevent this as
well as avoiding blankets etc that might occlude
babies airway - I am going to incorporate this idea of
avoiding a bulky "cover up" into my prenatal classes
