Wendy, I have worked with a mom who was paralyzed on one side of her body,
so in essence she only had one arm to work with. We had to come up with how
to use the same arm for both sides when breastfeeding: On one breast, she
would put the baby on in the clutch position; on the other breast, she would
use the same arm but put the baby in the cross-cradle position. The mom was
in a wheelchair, and the arm of the chair would help support/stabilize the
baby on the paralyzed side. It worked out beautifully. It's wonderful to
see how some moms won't let anything stop them.
As for increasing the milk supply, I like to recommend Domperidone in order
to avoid the side effects of Reglan. Is she taking all the other steps for
increasing milk supply, such as pumping every 2-3 hours, pumping 2 minutes
past when milk flow stops, pumping in the middle of the night when
prolactin level is higher? Best wishes to this mom.
