I have been in contact with a BFAR mother who has low milk production
issues that are compounded by a new 8 week old baby (her second) who is
miserable, screaming, and crying 80% of every day. At this point, I feel
we can't get the baby to nurse effectively until we find out why the baby
is so miserable.
The pediatrician has repeatedly dismissed her concerns, although she did
prescribe Zantac for possible reflux, which seemed to help for a few days,
but then the baby was just as miserable as ever. Because she has low milk
production and baby is receiving formula, the pediatrician recommended
switching to protein hydrolysate formula. She tried this for two weeks
without improvement. Then she tried soy and saw modest, but noticeable
improvement, although after a few days once again baby seemed just as
miserable as ever.
The mom self-referred to GI specialist, but he said the baby just had
"colic" and it was normal and would pass. Told the mom she just needed
more help at home. The mom feels the problem is not getting relief for
her, but rather for the baby.
The mother also self-referred to a neurologist to ask about the possibility
of sensory-integration problems, but the neurologist dismissed those
concerns, as well, and told her not to believe every new-age thing she
reads on the internet (this mom doesn't even have internet access).
She has seen a naturopath and has had CST performed, without positive results.
As you can imagine, this mother is coping with depression from the
minute-to-minute stress of trying to care for this miserable baby as well
as her older child, while having her concerns dismissed out of hand when
she reaches out to healthcare professionals. She said that she often feels
that she is just hanging on by a threat hoping somewhere there is an answer.
So I would like to ask if any of you know of a GI, SI, or other physician
anywhere near Ipswich, Massachusetts, who would not dismiss this mother's
concerns and would help her determine why her baby is so miserable. At
this point, her emphasis is not so much on a breastfeeding-friendly doctor
as one who has good pediatric diagnostic skills. Any leads would be
greatly appreciated.
