Greetings,
I received the following email from one of my clients and am at a loss as to
what to suggest next.
I hope you remember seeing me about a month ago. I am still breastfeeding
exclusively, but am still having problems. My daughter is still having green
stools. They are sometimes sticky and other times dark or brownish. Of
course, then there are the few times they are yellow. I have tried everything.
I was on sage for a while and seem to have fixed the oversupply. I have
also been on an elimination diet to try to pinpoint what is causing the upset.
I am down to eating very little and still see no change in her bowel
movements. She spends the entire day awake and seems very unhappy. I mentioned the
stools to my doctor, but he doesn’t seem concerned. Do you have any idea
what could be causing this? My husband wants me to put her on formula, but I
desperately want to continue to breastfeed. Other than the stool color and
wakefulness she seems fine.
Although my client is vegan, she has switched to a diet of rice, sweet
potatoes, turkey and yellow or green squash. She has been on this diet for
approximately a week. She has celiac disease and has been on a gluten-free,
dairy-free diet. She was taking a multiple vitamin and B12 but stopped after our
consult. She is on Levoxyl (Synthroid) for hypothyroidism and had her hormone
levels checked to be sure the dosage was still appropriate. Her daughter nurses
often for about 15-20 minutes. She uses one side for about 4 hours at a
time. Her daughter has about 10 explosive BMs a day, which are sticky, dark or
brownish. They don't smell. Her daughter is awake most of the day and although
she doesn't scream, she is fussy. She is now about 8 weeks old and rarely
smiles- maybe once every 3 days or so.
What else can we try?
TIA
Kathy
