Our lactation program, which began in 1989 with 1 LC and a Breastfeeding
Committee. It has now overgrown its bounds and we are looking to re-organize
but are interested in finding a program with a comprehensive focus and
insightful philosophy that we could model our re-organization after. Here are
some of our current questions:
1. How many deliveries do you have per year?
2. How many LC's do you have on staff?
3. What is the primary focus of your program? Is your focus preventative or
problem-oriented? Do you see all patients each day? Problem- only patients?
Do you utilize a referral system for patient contacts?
4. What is the breastfeeding responsibility of your staff RN?
5. What balance of pt. care and staff education do you seek?
6. Is your lactation staff as a whole responsible for staff ed. or is it the
responsibility of a particular LC person?
7. Do you only see in-pts. or do you have an out-pt. component to your program?
Who sees those pts.?
8. Do you cover 7 days a week? Which shifts?
9. What is the patient load daily for each LC?
10. Do you have a telephone hot-line for patient questions/ concerns? Who
fields these calls?
Any information that you could share would be so helpful. Thank you for any
insight that you can provide.
