That was my immediate gut reaction too! Eating disorders start when
the only way babies have with which to comfort and mother themselves
is to eat.
Here's a copy and paste from an article I did recently -- the comments
are from a clinical psychologist in Cape Town whose own kids were
breastfed and family bedded. He was responding to a local book on
sleep training, and the fact that babies should not be forced to 'self
soothe'.
"Cape Town Psychologist, Abraham le Roux, points out that the results
of forcing babies to ‘self soothe’ (necessary for sleep training) are of
serious concern too. Later as adults these people are likely to need to
continue to try to self soothe, and the soothers used may include
alcohol, drugs, compulsive overeating, obsessive sex, etc."
So compulsive eating starts right there... I would think this baby needs
to be carried in a sling, cuddled, rocked, stroked, sung to, played with,
and helped to know that it's mouth and stomach are not the only parts
of it that can get any nurturing.
Just my 2 cent's worth.
Pat (Cape Town)
