Regarding the mother who had ductus carcinoma insitu and is now unable to
breastfeed, I suspect that what she is feeling is not so much guilt as
grief. She is grieving loss of function. If she had lost the use of her
hand or her eyesight, people would more readily recognize that she had
reason, and a need, to mourn. She may also still be mourning the cancer at
age 18.
