From an IBCLC employed in a hospital, I am posting this. If you have a
response to this person that you don't want to appear on Lactnet (though why
you wouldn't is beyond me), then send it to me and I will forward it to the
original poster.
Rachel Myr

"I have a question concerning a situation at work. My boss is not an IBCLC
or RN but calls herself a lactation consultant and she sees patients in our
outpatient clinic and on the hospital floor. I bought some copyrighted
handouts for mothers and I pass them out when I am on the floor, she copied
the back of this flyer and passes it out when she is on. I told her it was
copyrighted and that it wasn't legal to copy it, but she continues. She
also copied a paper from the internet, changed the title as she disliked the
initial title, and passes that out. Again, I voiced my concerns.
Lately, we have had problems with what she is telling the patients,
especially those from our outpatient clinic. She seems to have given
information that was seriously flawed in such a way as to jeopardize the
outcome of breastfeeding in at least one case, and recommended a form of
treatment that I have been unable to find documentation for, for yeast.
Any concern I bring up is brushed off or met with defensively. She says
there are references for using cortisone for itchy nipples. I was unable to
find them.
So, what I would like to know, does anyone else use topical cortisone
combined with gel pads for yeast? And does anyone have any guidance for me
concerning the copyrighted material (to me it is a big deal, I have met the
ladies who did the fine work at conferences, so maybe I am biased).
These are just some examples of the kinds of problems we are having. I
hesitate to go to my unit director because I seriously doubt it would do any
good and I really, really need to keep my job. What I have done is: keep
informing her and showing her references when what she says is not
completely correct. Let our immediate boss know what IBCLC, CLC and LE
stand for and the education behind the initials. Document the incidents."
