Dear Sharon,
in our NICU it depends on how much of the bowel has been removed, what is
the status of the remaining bowel.Sometimes babies stay nil by mouth for
approx 3 weeks, than they start slowly with feeding, depending on their
weight, one or a couple of cc's per hour, mothers milk when available.
however when everything looks allright, babies may start with enteral
feedings soon after surgery, also preferbly with mothers milk.
greetings,
Yvonne Spreksel-Gorzeman,
IBCLC, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam,
the Netherlands.
