I've thought about the AAP SIDS recs and interpret them to mean that
maybe sleeping long and hard is not healthy for infants in terms of
SIDS risk. The pacifier thing is basically to keep them from getting
into too deep a sleep, and I think the back to sleep thing is the same.
I have had moms say "but he sleeps so much better on his tummy." I now
think that babies aren't meant to sleep "better' (i.e. deeper and
longer) and it appears to put them at greater risk for SIDS. Which may
be why brestfed babies have a lower incidence of SIDS. Formula babies
sleep too long and deep. In fact, I plan to start talking about the
whole "Babywise" issue as it relates to this (I live in Babywise
country as one of the authors - Bucknam - is one of our local pedis).
If anyone is looking for a research project, how about duration of
sleep periods and incidence of SIDS.
