Our local radio newscaster today reported on a study the pointed to
better coping skills in women who breastfeed. He said that the benefits
to baby are well-documented, but this is a new benefit discovery for
mothers. Maybe you heard this, too. I was driving and couldn't grab a
pen fast enough in Chicago traffic.
In addition, the latest AWHONN journal has a literature review on
treating sore nipples. Tea bags, lanolin, hydrogels, warm compresses,
air drying, etc., are all discussed comparatively. The conclusion is
that all work (or don't work) equally. The best treatment is prevention
by teaching proper latch on.
