Wow. What a story and reminder! Thank you.
I have always been fascinated with research that shows how anorexics
literally do not *see* themselves accurately, tracing an outline of
themselves on a mirror that adds inches to their profile. Mothers
of FTT babies may well not, literally, *see* their child accurately,
and/or as others do. In addition to psychological imaging issues,
the child's deterioration may have been gradual so that like the
proverbial frog in the hot-pot, the mom may also just may not have
noticed the gradual deterioration. I think recognizing that the
mother may have been scared to bring in the child for evaluation was
insightful and empathic. What a good call!!
