This is not my area of expertise by far. However I think a suckling baby
frequently put to breast is better than a pump. If the baby is a well baby
and able to suckle well, use a lactation aid. I really love the "man-made"
ones with a long feeding tube threaded into the supplement. I think the
nipple contact, licking, touching, skin to skin and total bonding or body
contact is not given enough credit in the milk making process. Caressing the
baby and baby caressing you while nursing and the eye to eye contact are
powerful.
Pumping and bottle feeding is a form of separation. Please no flames from
anyone who is pumping for a non-latching baby or by choice. I am not here to
disparage anyone. These comments are made as to what I woud recommend for
someone wanting to bf at breast with a relactation or adoption situation.
I would recommend as much as mom can have baby in kangaroo style and to
breast is the best. Babies do not nurse exactly on a schedule so the baby
will naturally cluster feed etc. If I were to relactate or adopt I think I
would do domperidone and baby to breast with a nursing supply line. I think
pumping is needed if the baby is premie or won't latch at all yet.
