It's a while since I posted. I hope someone can give me an idea what's going
on here.
Baby is 6 weeks old. 2nd child, older breastfed for ages. This child born at
home, lovely gentle waterbirth. I saw them a day or 2 after birth and made
suggestions to improve attachment as mother had forgotten how to feed a
newborn.
A colleague refered them to me after seeing them for the six-week check.
Baby has been gaining weight well but slips down the nipple after initial
attachment and makes clicking sounds, she's taking in so much air she is
terribly windy and by the end of the day blows up like a balloon (my own
granddaughter did this until my daughter allowed me to sort out the latch!)
Mum's breasts not overlly full, let-down not fierce. I assisted them to get
an exagerated asymmetrical latch which seemed to inprove things slightly but
baby soon slipped down again.
I checked baby's mouth, no tongue tie, or tight labial frenulum, no high
arched palate but when I placed a finger in her mouth she gagged, mum
reports that she does this a lot as if can't cope with the nipple that far
back. There was no oral suction at birth and she's had no artificial teats
at all. The problem is the same whether she feeds upright or lying down.
They saw a doctor who said there was nothing wrong with baby's mouth.
Mum would be grateful for any suggestions as to what is causing this and
what she can do to improve things.
Best wishes
